UK citizenship can be obtained through naturalization (on the basis of work, business or marriage), registration, as well as automatic acquisition by descent. Under the standard procedure, you must live in the country for 5 years to obtain permanent residence, and then another 1 year as a permanent resident – 6 years in total. For spouses of British citizens, the period is reduced to 3 years. It is not possible to become a citizen without any residence at all – the naturalization process in the United Kingdom is tied to physical presence in the country and strict compliance with absence limits.

When obtaining this status, you can retain your existing citizenship. The United Kingdom does not require its new citizens to renounce their previous passport. The minimum amount you will have to spend is about EUR 2,540 per person. This includes the naturalization fee, the mandatory integration test and the B1-level language exam, as well as the fee for issuing a passport booklet. The final budget should also include the cost of certified document translations and immigration lawyer services.

Legal Basis for Obtaining UK Citizenship

The legal status of foreigners in the Kingdom and the procedure for obtaining UK citizenship are governed by the British Nationality Act 1981 and the Immigration Act 1971. The government updates the Immigration Rules each year, setting out the requirements for applicants for different types of visas leading to permanent residence. The principal authority responsible for considering residence and citizenship applications is the UK Home Office and its division, UK Visas and Immigration.

Current legislation provides for the following conditions for obtaining a British passport:

  • compliance with the residence requirement;
  • being of legal age;
  • successfully passing the test on the history and structure of the country;
  • proof of English (or Welsh/Scottish Gaelic) language proficiency at no lower than B1 level under the CEFR;
  • no serious criminal convictions, fines, bankruptcies or immigration law violations.

The United Kingdom recognizes and permits multiple citizenship. A foreign national obtaining a British passport is not required to renounce their original status. However, they should review the laws of their country of origin, as some states automatically deprive their citizens of nationality when they acquire a second passport.

UK citizenship gives the right to:

  • live, work and study in the United Kingdom without immigration restrictions or visas;
  • vote and stand for election at any level (parliamentary and local);
  • receive protection from UK consular services abroad;
  • hold positions in the courts, police, armed forces and government institutions that are not available to foreign nationals.

Along with a national passport, immigrants acquire rights and obligations, including the need to respect and comply with the laws of the United Kingdom, declare income and pay taxes (although tax residence here is generally linked to actual residence rather than citizenship status). A citizen must appear in court to perform jury service if they receive the relevant summons (an unjustified refusal may result in a fine).

Benefits of a British Passport

The British passport consistently ranks among the top 10 strongest passports in the world. According to current Passport Index data, UK citizens can visit 170 countries without obtaining a visa in advance (or with a visa on arrival/electronic eTA authorization). The list includes the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Schengen Area jurisdictions and South American countries.

In terms of pure travel mobility, the British passport is almost equal to the leading EU passports (for example, Germany has 174 visa-free destinations and Spain has 175). The only difference is that, from the end of 2026, British citizens need to obtain an electronic ETIAS authorization for trips to Europe (an analogue of the US ESTA system), with a nominal fee of EUR 20.

UK citizenship is lifelong and unconditional. Its holder has access to:

  • social support, including unemployment benefits, housing subsidies, pension payments and assistance in critical life situations;
  • NHS (National Health Service) healthcare free of charge (by comparison, every immigrant with temporary/permanent residence pays an annual Immigration Health Surcharge of about GBP 1,035);
  • education, the cost of which for citizens cannot exceed GBP 9,790 per year (foreign students pay from GBP 25,000 to GBP 45,000 per year for the same programs);
  • banking services – UK citizens can freely open accounts, obtain mortgages at the lowest rates and attract venture capital.

The British tax system is tied not to citizenship but to tax residence. With a UK passport, you can live and earn income in another country – in such a situation the United Kingdom will not charge a percentage of your income (unlike the United States, whose strict tax system follows American citizens worldwide). Children born to you after you obtain a British passport automatically become UK citizens, regardless of where in the world they are born.

If you are comparing UK and EU citizenship options, leave a request for a consultation. An immigration specialist can assess your eligibility, compare available pathways and help you choose the most suitable strategy for obtaining a second passport.

Who Can Obtain UK Citizenship

In 2026, there are four ways to obtain a British passport. Naturalization is the most common option for foreign nationals. You obtain a long-term visa, live in the country under it, work, pay taxes, then obtain permanent residence (ILR), and after that citizenship itself. Those who marry a British citizen have access to simplified naturalization – they can apply for a passport after just 3 years of lawful residence in the country (provided they already have permanent residence).

Citizenship by descent is a route based on the principle of bloodline. Depending on the date of birth and the status of the parents, citizenship is either granted to the child automatically or through the registration procedure.

Children of foreign nationals born in the United Kingdom are not automatically granted citizenship. For this, at least one parent must already hold a British passport or permanent residence. Except for acquisition by descent, absolutely every route to British citizenship passes through the mandatory intermediate stage of obtaining permanent residence.

Repatriation

In the classic sense, as in Romania or Israel, where a person can prove ethnic roots and immediately obtain a passport, there is no repatriation program in the United Kingdom. However, the country has an alternative program based on family history. There are two ways to obtain citizenship: by descent and through the UK Ancestry visa.

If you were born outside the United Kingdom and at least one of your parents was, at the time of your birth, a British citizen by descent who was also born abroad, you do not inherit the status automatically from birth. To obtain it, you should submit documents for your first passport at a consulate. As a general rule, status is not transmitted abroad beyond the first generation (from father to son). However, in 2026 there are a number of exceptions for those born before 1983 or whose parents were in UK government (Crown) service abroad. Such cases are considered individually through the Home Office registration procedure.

If you do not have an automatic right to a passport but have a grandmother or grandfather who was born in the United Kingdom, you are entitled to obtain status through the UK Ancestry visa. However, the law limits the number of potential applicants by specifying around 50 states whose citizens may apply – these are Commonwealth countries. They include Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Cyprus and Malta. Citizens of post-Soviet jurisdictions cannot use this option.

Under the program, one of your grandparents must have been born in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man (birth in Ireland before 31 March 1922 also qualifies). Both biological relationship and formal adoption are accepted. The applicant must be over 17 and must have a genuine intention and physical ability to work or conduct business in the United Kingdom.

The visa is issued immediately for 5 years. After living in the United Kingdom for this period and working throughout it (without long breaks), the applicant applies for permanent residence and, 12 months later, for full UK citizenship under the general rules. The government visa fee is about EUR 838.

Naturalization

Naturalization in the United Kingdom is a legal process in which an adult foreign national voluntarily acquires citizenship of the Kingdom by proving full integration into local society, law-abiding conduct and an intention to make the country the permanent center of their interests. The procedure is administered by the Home Office and is based on the fundamental British Nationality Act. For a standard naturalization application to be approved, a foreign national must meet a number of criteria:

  • be of legal age;
  • have held permanent resident status for at least 12 months at the time of application;
  • have lived in the United Kingdom for at least 5 years;
  • pass the state test on British history, traditions and laws;
  • prove proficiency in English (Welsh or Gaelic) at no lower than B1 level under the CEFR;
  • have no serious criminal or administrative offenses, debts or fines.

To meet the residence requirement, during the period of residence in the United Kingdom you must not have been absent for more than 450 days in total over the entire five-year period or more than 90 days during the final year before applying.

Documents are submitted online through the government Form AN portal. Under the official rules, the standard waiting period is up to 6 months. In practice, a response may take longer. After receiving the approval letter, you have 3 months to attend a citizenship ceremony at the local council by appointment. There you swear allegiance to the King and receive a paper Certificate of Naturalisation. The government fee for obtaining the status is about EUR 2,120. This amount includes the citizenship ceremony fee.

There is one difficulty in the naturalization process that should be taken into account. The United Kingdom applies the “first-day rule” – the Home Office automatically checks where you were exactly 5 years ago (or 3 years ago for spouses) in relation to the date you press the “Submit” button on the application. If you were on holiday outside the United Kingdom on that day, the application will be refused and the fee will not be refunded.

The United Kingdom recognizes and permits multiple citizenship

Simplified Naturalization

UK immigration law provides legal ways to reduce the residence period or simplify the naturalization procedure. For example, citizenship through marriage in the United Kingdom is obtained after three years of residence in the country. This route is available to officially registered spouses or civil partners of persons who already hold British citizenship on the date of application. The 12-month waiting rule after obtaining permanent residence is completely waived.

Spouses of British citizens are subject to more lenient absence requirements – to satisfy the residence requirement, they must not spend more than 270 days abroad in total over the full 3-year period (instead of the standard 450 days). The limit for the final year remains unchanged – no more than 90 days. In addition to the standard set of documents, the file must include a marriage certificate and the valid British passport of the spouse.

Accelerated acquisition of citizenship through investment is not available in the United Kingdom. It is also impossible to buy property and immediately obtain a passport. Neither the investor visa (Tier 1 Investor, which is now closed, although statuses already issued under it continue to be serviced), nor the Innovator Founder visa, nor the Global Talent visa for outstanding individuals accelerates the consideration of the citizenship application itself.

Business immigrants are still subject to the standard 5-year residence requirement for naturalization. However, they receive an acceleration at the previous stage – when obtaining permanent residence. Major investors and successful startup founders can obtain permanent resident status not after 5 years, but after 2 or 3 years. Because the law then requires them to wait 12 months before naturalization, the total path from entering the country to obtaining a passport is reduced to 3-4 years. The document package for such applications is standard.

Simplified acquisition of citizenship is also available to those with historical ties to the United Kingdom. Under the government Windrush Scheme, this category includes citizens of Commonwealth countries who came to the Kingdom for permanent residence before 1 January 1973, as well as their children. If a person has lived in the country all their life but does not have a passport, the state confirms their status free of charge, without language or other tests, and issues a Certificate of Naturalisation. Applications are submitted online.

Citizenship by Birth

Birth in the United Kingdom does not guarantee automatic acquisition of its passport. A child becomes a citizen immediately if the child is born on British territory and, at that time, the father or mother has UK citizenship, permanent residence or Settled Status (for EU citizens who moved under the EUI Settlement Scheme). The parents may immediately apply for the child’s first British passport through the standard online registration form.

If, at the time of the birth, the father and mother are in the United Kingdom on temporary visas, the child does not become British. The newborn receives the status of either parent. However, if at least one parent later obtains permanent residence or becomes naturalized, the child acquires the legal right to become British.

Those who were born in the United Kingdom to foreign nationals and lived in the country for the first 10 years of their life have an unconditional right to register as citizens of the Kingdom. During those years, the minor must not have been outside the country for more than 90 days in any individual year.

Fastest Ways to Obtain UK Citizenship in 2026

The UK immigration system does not provide a paid expedited option at the stage when the authorities make the citizenship decision. The Home Office considers all applications under the general procedure. The actual speed of obtaining a passport depends on how quickly the applicant can complete the permanent residence stage. The table below provides a detailed overview of the fastest and most realistic ways to obtain a British passport.

RouteAverage total period before applicationMain condition
Marriage to a UK citizen3 yearsObtaining permanent residence + official marriage to a British citizen (the one-year waiting period after permanent residence is waived)
Talent and innovator visas4 yearsAccelerated permanent residence after 3 years + one year of waiting before applying for a passport
Citizenship by descentUp to 6 monthsBirth outside the United Kingdom to a parent who held British citizenship otherwise than by descent
Standard naturalization route6 years5 years of residence to obtain permanent residence + one mandatory year of waiting before applying for a passport.

 Citizenship is obtained most quickly and cheaply by those who can prove British descent. For them, the passport processing time corresponds to the period needed to review the documents, and the fee is lower than for other applicant categories. If there were no UK citizens in your family line, citizenship through marriage to a British citizen may be a suitable option. Spouses of citizens are the only category of migrants for whom the residence requirement is reduced to 3 years and the 12-month waiting rule after obtaining permanent residence is completely waived.

For holders of Global Talent and Innovator Founder visas, the residence period is 3 years before obtaining permanent residence and one year before applying. This option is suitable for scientists, IT specialists, internationally recognized figures in the arts, or businesspeople with a unique startup project approved by the competent UK authority.

Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining UK Citizenship

The standard naturalization process in the United Kingdom takes at least 6 years and consists of the following stages:

  1. Obtaining the Initial Residence Permit.
    For naturalization, you must live in the country legally. The basis for this may be a student, work, family or business visa valid for 2 to 5 years. Documents should be submitted to the consulate or embassy in the country of citizenship/permanent residence. Processing takes from 3 to 8 weeks. The visa fee is from GBP 819 to GBP 1,618. In addition, the mandatory IHS healthcare surcharge of GBP 1,035 per year for an adult must be paid. Overall, this stage costs from EUR 2,200 to EUR 3,230. The result is a visa vignette in the passport and an electronic record confirming the right of residence.
  2. Preparing for and Taking the Mandatory Tests.
    One to three months before applying for permanent residence, the applicant must confirm integration into society. To do this, they must pass a language exam at B1 CEFR level or above (cost – GBP 126-250) and the specialized Life in the UK Test on the history and structure of the country (GBP 50).
  3. Obtaining Permanent Residence (Indefinite Leave to Remain – ILR).
    An application for permanent residence can be submitted after 3-5 years of continuous residence in the United Kingdom. At this stage, the authorities check that the applicant has no convictions, violations or excessively long periods of absence from the country (more than 180 days in any 12-month period). The standard processing time is up to 6 months. For an additional GBP 500/1,000, the process can be expedited to 1 or 2 working days. The basic fee is GBP 3,266 (EUR 3,771). Once the application is approved, you receive permanent resident status and are no longer subject to visa restrictions.
  4. Applying for Citizenship.
    Twelve months after obtaining permanent residence (if you are married to a citizen – immediately after receiving ILR), you can submit documents for UK citizenship. During the final 12 months, you must not leave the country for more than 90 days. The application can be submitted online, by post or in person at the Home Office. The naturalization fee is equivalent to EUR 2,120 – GBP 1,839 (including GBP 130 for mandatory participation in the ceremony). The application is considered for up to 6 months. As a result, the applicant receives official approval from the Home Office.
  5. Ceremony and Receipt of the Certificate of Naturalisation.
    Within 3 months after the authorities approve the application, the applicant must visit the local authority, take the oath and sign the citizenship documents. The ceremony ends with the issue of a Certificate of Naturalisation confirming the immigrant’s new status.
  6. Obtaining a British Passport.
    A passport application is submitted online or by post. The processing time is from 3 weeks. The standard document costs GBP 13.50 less when applying electronically – GBP 102 (EUR 117).

Documents Required for UK Citizenship

Regardless of the route through which you apply for British citizenship, you will need a basic set of documents.

CategorySupporting documentsWhy required
Identity and travelValid international passport + all cancelled passports for the last 5 years (or 3 years for spouses)Identity confirmation and accurate calculation of days of absence from the country based on stamps
Immigration statusILR (permanent residence) approval letter, Settled Status profile (Share Code) or old BRP cardProof that you are not subject to a time limit on your immigration status
IntegrationDigital Life in the UK Test certificate (unique ID number)Proof of successful completion of the history and law test
Language levelB1 SELT certificate (ID number) or UK university diploma (for foreign diplomas – Ecctis certificate)Proof of English language proficiency
RefereesTwo signed forms from referees with their passport and contact detailsVerification of your identity and confirmation of “good character”
Finances and taxesNational Insurance number, P60 forms, employer letters or tax returns (Self-Assessment)Proof of financial solvency and absence of debts to the state

Depending on the basis of the application, additional documents will be required. For example, for naturalization through marriage, you need an official marriage or civil partnership certificate, as well as the spouse’s valid British passport or Certificate of Naturalisation (as proof that the spouse is a citizen).

When applying by descent, you should prepare your full birth certificate showing the names of your parents, the British birth certificate of your parent or their Certificate of Naturalisation/Registration issued before your birth, and your parents’ marriage certificate.

If documents are issued in a language other than English or Welsh, you need an official certified translation stating the date and all details of the translator. Official birth and marriage certificates do not expire. However, a SELT B1 language certificate is formally valid for 2 years. If this document was previously submitted for a visa or permanent residence and accepted, the Home Office allows it to be used again even after its validity has expired.

For minors, the document package is prepared separately. Children do not need to take the Life in the UK Test or prove language proficiency, but they are subject to their own requirements. The file includes:

  • a full birth certificate, necessarily showing both parents;
  • a copy of the parent’s Certificate of Naturalisation or confirmation of the parent’s permanent residence status (ILR) obtained after the child’s birth;
  • a document signed by both parents confirming that they consent to the child obtaining a British passport (if one of them objects or contact with that parent has been lost, court decisions on sole custody will be required);

The child also needs two referees. One of them must be a professional who knows the child personally (a school teacher, form teacher, family doctor or childcare worker are ideal).

Cost of Obtaining UK Citizenship

The total cost of obtaining British citizenship consists of mandatory government fees and related document preparation expenses. Below is a detailed calculation of all costs for one adult applicant in 2026.

Expense itemCost, GBP
Naturalization government fee1,839
Life in the UK Test50
English language exam (B1)126-250
Document translations, per document30-60
Notary certification services, per page5-20

On average, obtaining a passport of the Kingdom requires spending from GBP 2,200 (EUR 2,540). The cost of immigration specialist services providing assistance with obtaining British citizenship is calculated separately.

Why UK Citizenship May Be Refused

The most common reasons for refusal of UK citizenship are:

  • submission of forged documents and deception – use of fake certificates, purchased language certificates or concealment of important biographical facts;
  • immigration violations – for example, working more hours than permitted by a student visa or overstaying a status;
  • problems with the residence requirement – exceeding the absence limit of 450 days over 5 years (or 270 days over 3 years for spouses);
  • the “first-day” trap – being outside the United Kingdom on exactly the same calendar day, but 3 or 5 years earlier, relative to the application submission date;
  • submission of an unsuitable language certificate from a provider that is not on the approved list.

When applying through marriage, the immigration service may conduct a spot check to determine whether the relationship is genuine. If the couple does not live together, has separate bank accounts or cannot prove that they maintain a joint household, naturalization will be refused. When applying by descent, refusal is often based on an inability to prove the chain of kinship.

If you are refused because of a technical error (for example, you did not have enough days of residence), you can wait until the requirement is met and apply again. The fee will have to be paid again. If you are sure that the law is on your side and the immigration officer made an error (for example, incorrectly calculated your days based on passport stamps or failed to notice an attached document), you have the right to request an internal administrative review. For this, the specialized Form NR is completed.

An alternative to obtaining a UK passport is pursuing citizenship of the European Union. Depending on your circumstances, EU citizenship may provide broader opportunities to live, work, study and establish long-term residence across EU member states.

Is It Worth Obtaining UK Citizenship in 2026?

Obtaining UK citizenship is a serious step that requires careful consideration. The advantages of a UK passport include a large number of visa-free destinations and the right to live in one of the world’s most stable and safe countries. The disadvantages include significant financial costs of naturalization and a high cost of living.

In the long term, obtaining UK citizenship is suitable for highly qualified professionals whose salary is comfortably above the minimum annual threshold of GBP 41,700 for standard work visas. It can also be beneficial for entrepreneurs with unique innovative projects and people entering genuine marriages with British citizens. Naturalization will be difficult for workers in humanitarian and low-paid professions, freelancers without contracts with large companies, and those who are not prepared to strictly limit their travel abroad.

If your goal is to live on passive or remote income, choose Spain, Portugal or Cyprus, because the United Kingdom has no digital nomad visa or programs for rentiers. Those seeking a passport through property purchase or investment should choose Caribbean countries or Vanuatu. Such programs are closed in the United Kingdom. Also bear in mind that the United Kingdom is not the right option if you want to reduce your tax burden – there is a progressive income tax scale with a rate reaching 45%. In this context, the UAE or Malta may be easier for you.

Professional Assistance and Migrant Reviews

The United Kingdom takes the provision of immigration services extremely seriously. Support from a certified lawyer significantly changes the mechanics of preparing and submitting documents. A specialist not only helps prepare the file correctly but also makes sure that all legal requirements are taken into account.

Most immigrants who have obtained UK citizenship note the convenience of the eVisas system and digital appointment slots at UKVCAS centers. At the same time, some aspects of the system can be difficult to understand. According to reviews, the standard 6-month processing period is a lottery. Those who have experienced delays often point out that it is easier to have documents pre-checked by lawyers, as the Home Office can delay cases even because of minor deficiencies in the file.

Applying for citizenship independently is suitable for those with an impeccably clean history of residence in the country under a standard five-year work visa and a minimum number of holidays. If there is even one disputed point – for example, a long absence from the Kingdom or an old fine – consulting a qualified specialist can save you not only money but also months of waiting.
